1938 Rosamarie Magdalena Albach is born in Vienna at the 23. september at 22.05 p.m. She is the first child from the married couple Magda Schneider and Wolf Albach-Retty who are both actors. (.)
In october the whole family moves from Vienna to Schönau at Berchtesgaden. Here Romy grows up under the eyes of her grandmother Maria Schneider while her mother has engagements. Her grandmother on her father`s side is the castle-actress Rosa Albach Retty who became 105 years on the 26. december 1979. The name of the paternal grandmother was originally Rosa Retty. "Retty" is the Vienna-form of the original hungarien family name. Rosa Retty was born in Berlin during an engagement of her parents who were also actors. After the marriage with a K.a.K.-officer named Albach she called herself Rosa Albach-Retty. Her son Wolfgang Albach then called himself Wolf Albach-Retty as an actor. Therefore Romy Schneider`s real name is Rosemarie Albach.
(.)
The name Rosemarie is the combination of the names of the paternal grandmother, Rosa, and the maternal grandmother, Maria. Romy Schneider owns the German nationality. She was called "Romy" from earliest childhood. She was still called Rosemarie Albach in the times of her movie-debut. She was given the name Rosemarie Schneider-Albach as actress in her first movie which - was probably her mother`s idea. But some critics also wrote by mistake Rosemarie Albach Schneider. In publicity-articles about her first movie the short form "Romy" was often mentioned and in this way established in public. In her second movie "Feuerwerk" she was officially named "Romy Schneider".

Romy Schneider forever: "Sissi"- movies frozen (1998)
(.)
Romy Schneider won the hearts of the audience all over the world with the role of "Sissi". Those three movies about the life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth still reach high viewing figures during television repeats.
(.)
But the "ravages of time" were gnawing considerably on the old movies. The Munich enterprise of Leo Kirch was able to restore the three movies with modern digital technology to keep them true for our future generations.
(.)
On the hunt for the grey veil of mist
At the age of seventeen Romy Schneider became suddenly a star with her first "Sissi"-movie in 1955. The unforgottable actress from Vienna who died in 1982 would have become 60 years at the 23. september. "The original negatives became worn with each copy from year to year ", says the material expert Paul Reichl from Kirch`s company Taurus -Film. And hundreds of copies were made from the "Sissi"-movies. The result : the colours faded and a grey veil of mist developed on the movies. The involved technical experts had an exciting painstaking and detailed work with the restoration which cost about 300.000 DM. Every picture had to be "felt all over" und was then transfered to a new digital master band. At that occasion the colour was brightened up and even the scrathes on the movie matrial were retouched on the computer screen.
(.)
We were also able to eliminate the typical flickering of old movies which develops from the chemical change in the "emulsion-film" of the movie", explains Reichl. The roaring was as well filtered away to a large extent. "We avoided to give the movie an inordinately large electronic touch so that the movies do not have a sterile effect", emphasizes the expert.

The new digitalized Sissi - videos
(.)
Vacuum-packed in aluminium foil
The selling rights for the "Sissi-trilogy" is privatly ownd from Kirch since the 70s as well as the original negatives. Future copies are made from the new digital master band. The original negatives shall be frozen and conserved for eternity according to the motto of the "immortal Sissi". Therefore the liquid has to be taken away from the "emulsion-film" in dry cupboards. After that the movies are loosley rolled up and - similar to grinded coffee - double vaccum-packed in aluminuim foil. The movies come in cardboard boxes in the "sanctuary" of Kirch`s enormous movie store-room in Unterföhring: this is a cold store about the size of a classroom in which the valuable movies are stored packed by minus eight degrees celsius.
(.)
Will "Sissi" still be a box-office hit in the year 2500?
"The death of each movie material is moisture and high temperature", explains Reichl. "We are able to protect the movies for at least 500 years with this preservation. And I am convinced that "Sissi" will have a great audinece even in the year 2500 - those movies are absolutly classics." The preservation is important because we cannot know the future technics for movie-dealing.
(.)
The sensation!
During th search for the movie scenes in the best condition an unknown black-white- movie material of about 18 minutes length was discovered in the archives which documents the shooting of the second part from the Sissi-trilogy. Also a tape was found on which Romy Schneider herself (!) comments on the work of the movie team. So she talks for example about how an stubborn donkey dropped her during the shooting and gave her some blue patches.
(.)
The black-white shooting shows Romy Schneider discussing her text at a balcony at Schloß Schönbrunn in Vienna. At the same time her movie partner Karlheinz Böhm drives in front with "Jockele" and toots on the horn.
(.)
"Jockele" was a Karman Ghia which Romy got as a present for her 18. birthday short before.
